In Bali, the word Gayatri is most strongly associated with the Gayatri mantra, which is the first verse of the Tri Sandja prayer that all Balinese people are taught from pre-school age onwards and should recite three times a day (at 6 am, 12 noon, and 6 pm). The Gayatri Mantra goes as follows:
Om bhur bhuah swaha
The meaning of the mantra is (based on the translation of Kajmani from the EagleSpace blog, https://blog.eaglespace.com/gayatri-mantra-meaning/):
Oh God, Giver of Life, Remover of pain and sorrow, Bestower of happiness.
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light,
May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.
The core philosophy of Gayatri has been distilled into three principles, called Tri Gaya. In Indonesian, gaya means style or force, while in ancient Greek it (usually spelt gaia) means land or earth. The idea is that these principles represent the lifestyle or lifeforce behind Gayatri. They are our worldview. In Sanskrit, tri means three.
Gaya 1. We worship at the altar of beauty. The aesthetic value of an object, thing or action always overrides practical and financial factors in our considerations.
Gaya 2. We want to build sustainable, long-term symbiotic relationships with the world around us. This includes all of the people in our orbit – the guests who stay at Gayatri, the staff, and the suppliers of food, drinks, cement, sand, etc. – as well as the animals who share our land, the plants, trees, and flowers that are part of the property, and the other inanimate objects that are part of the whole that is Gayatri.
Gaya 3. We represent Balinese culture in a deep, genuine, and authentic way. This includes the architecture of the buildings, the composition and character of the staff, the food on our menu, the offerings made daily, the work costume (to come), and the observance of religious holidays and the carrying out of religious ceremonies on special days in the Bali Hindu calendar, such as full moon, new moon, kajeng kliwon, Galungan, Kuningan, Tumpek Landep, and Rainan di Sanggah.
